The Heath Tightens After Two

The New Course at Walton Heath Golf Club began as a nine-hole layout in 1907 and reached 18 holes in 1913, when the Lord Mayor of London opened the completed course. Herbert Fowler designed both Walton Heath layouts, but this second course was shaped to offer a different challenge within the same open heathland.

The first two holes provide a measured introduction before the heather begins to tighten from the third. The routing then develops a sterner rhythm across ground shared and intertwined with the Old Course. Its setting grew from historic common land whose lean soil and open character created conditions similar to seaside terrain.

At 7,015 yards from the back tees, the course provides a long championship test. Fowler also built variety into the approaches, asking for shots through the air and running shots along the ground. No par 3 appears after the 10th, leaving a sustained closing sequence that ends with a par 5 followed by two contrasting par 4s.
