From Upper Ridge to Lower Links

The Championship Course at Royal Dornoch Golf Club took formal shape in 1886, when Old Tom Morris developed the club's original nine holes into an 18-hole course. The design did not remain fixed. John Sutherland refined the layout, J.H. Taylor advised on an extension, Donald Ross reshaped the opening holes, and George Duncan later contributed to post-war changes.

The history is visible in a course moving across distinct levels above the Dornoch Firth. Some holes use the higher ridge, while others settle nearer the beach. These changes in elevation influence wind exposure, sightlines, and the way a ball reaches the green.

Raised putting surfaces are central to the challenge. Slopes around them can reject weak approaches and leave delicate recoveries from below. The 14th, Foxy, proves bunkers are not always needed: its green sits across the line of play behind a steep front rise, while the double dog-leg rewards position over force.

Royal Dornoch's character comes from this close relationship between routing and terrain. The ground creates the questions, allowing the course to feel demanding without appearing overworked.
