Where Every Hole Meets the Sea

The golf course at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club traces its roots to 1891, when Charles Gibson laid out nine holes on Lock's Common. After more land became available, Ramsey Hunter created an 18-hole course in 1895. The club received its royal title from King Edward VII in 1909, and later work by Harry Colt, F. G. Hawtree, J. H. Taylor, and Tom Simpson refined the layout.

The opening four and closing six holes carry the clearest links character, while the middle section rises onto higher, gorse-covered ground with a heathland feel. The routing repeatedly changes direction rather than following a simple out-and-back line, leaving golfers to judge the Bristol Channel wind from new angles throughout the round.

Position matters as much as distance. Fairways offer preferred sides, and the bunkering can turn a loose drive into a difficult recovery. The opening stretch stays close to the coast before the course moves inland and later returns towards the sea. This blend of exposed links turf and elevated ground gives Royal Porthcawl a character found nowhere else in Wales.
