A Parkland Home at Great Oak

The golf course at Newport Golf Club traces its history to 1903, when the club formally opened a nine-hole layout at Ladyhill Farm. It expanded to 18 holes in 1905, then moved to Great Oak, Rogerstone, in 1912. Harry Vardon and Willie Fernie were consulted on the proposed layout at the new site.

The course moves through gently rolling ground with broad views across the surrounding countryside. Its mature setting offers shelter from the elements, yet placement remains important. The opening par four bends right around an oak, immediately asking golfers to choose a sensible line from the tee.

The character is measured and strategic. Clear bunkering defines preferred angles, while ridges change what golfers can see and how approaches are judged. At the 17th, a drive reaching the crest reveals a green below. The final hole is a short par five played uphill before the approach opens from the ridge. Newport has also hosted notable Welsh and national amateur events.
