The Championship Beside the Barry Burn

The Championship Course at Carnoustie Golf Links began as a 10-hole layout by Allan Robertson in 1842. Old Tom Morris extended it to 18 holes in 1867, before James Braid oversaw major changes in 1926 that prepared the course for its first Open Championship in 1931.

Its reputation is built on control rather than spectacle. Deep fairway bunkers, ditches, and out of bounds repeatedly narrow the safe line, while the prevailing wind can turn apparently simple decisions into demanding ones.

The sixth, Hogan's Alley, offers a bold route between bunkers and the boundary fence, rewarding an accurate drive but punishing anything loose. Later, the long par-three 16th and awkward 17th raise the pressure before the famous finishing hole.

The course has hosted eight Opens, with winners including Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson, and Francesco Molinari. Across those championships, its closing stretch has produced some of the game's most dramatic finishes.
