Golf on the Limestone Heights

The golf course at Southerndown Golf Club took shape on Ogmore Down, where the club was formally established in 1906. Willie Fernie prepared the early course, followed by revisions from Herbert Fowler, Willie Park Jr., and Harry Colt. Donald Steel later contributed to the layout, leaving a design shaped across several periods rather than one architect's single plan.

The ground is unusual for Welsh golf. A limestone shelf rises more than 70 metres above the sea, with acidic sandy soil supporting heather, bracken, gorse, and fine bent and fescue grasses. Sand carried inland by westerly winds gives the opening eight holes a firm, links-like feel, despite the course sitting high above the shoreline.

Trees and artificial water hazards are absent, so the defence comes from exposed slopes, bunkers, uneven stances, and wind. Sheep continue to graze the common land around play. The par-three fifth, "Carter's Folly", demands an accurate iron, while the downhill 18th crosses a split-level fairway towards a large, guarded green beside the clubhouse.
