Between Castle Ruins and Cliffs

The golf course at Pennard Golf Club began in 1896, before James Braid created the foundation of the present layout in 1908. C. K. Cotton later revised parts of the course, adding another layer to a design shaped by the high, exposed ground of the Gower Peninsula.

Pennard sits around 200 feet above sea level, earning its "Links in the Sky" name. The turf runs across dunes and uneven hollows, with few flat lies and several blind shots. Strong winds moving through the Bristol Channel can quickly change the safest route into a hole.

The 7th gives the course its clearest sense of place. Its tumbling fairway passes between the ruins of Pennard Castle and an older church before reaching a sunken green. Later, the long 16th plays across rippled ground towards a clifftop green above Three Cliffs Bay. The historic setting and coastal exposure give every part of the round a character tied closely to Pennard.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Pennard adds one of Wales' highest-ranked links rounds to a South Wales itinerary, with Swansea and the wider Gower Peninsula close by. Its back-tee length is compact by modern standards, although the exposed ground remains demanding when the wind rises.

Kinfern can pair the course with Machynys Monk's Island or Royal Porthcawl, creating a varied regional experience without excessive transfers. The setting also leaves time to explore the Gower coast, allowing the round to form part of a wider stay rather than a rushed stop.
