Where Two Architects Meet the Dunes

The golf course at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club was established in 1922, when members of Newton Nottage Golf Club formed a new club and opened a nine-hole course. Harry Colt laid out the original links. Wartime use later reduced the playable course, prompting a substantial post-war rebuilding programme.

Philip Mackenzie Ross designed the present back nine in 1947, taking the routing west into higher, more exposed dunes. The outward half remains gentler and more open, while the inward holes climb and tighten through the sandhills, especially when wind arrives from the Bristol Channel.

The elevated 13th tee introduces a sweeping dogleg around the dunes, and the 14th climbs towards a well-defended green. The final stretch does not relax: three long par fours close the round, with the 18th asking players to avoid rough and a ditch before approaching a green guarded by swales and bunkers.

Pyle & Kenfig adds recognised championship history to a South Wales golf experience. The club co-hosted the 2002 Amateur Championship with Royal Porthcawl and later welcomed the Men's Home Internationals.
