Along the Via Julia

The Roman Road Course at Celtic Manor Resort opened in 1995 as the first course developed at the resort. Robert Trent Jones Sr. shaped the layout across ground once crossed by the Via Julia, the Roman highway that gave the course its name. The routing preserved the archaeology while using the site's natural contours and mature trees.

ts elevated setting opens views over the Severn Estuary towards Somerset and Devon. Long fairways allow room from the tee, although streams and wooded turns narrow the choices on several holes. The long par-three 8th plays through a corridor of trees, while the short par-four 14th bends from right to left before an approach over water.

Roman Road has hosted European Tour and Senior Tour events, including the Celtic Manor Wales Open. Its tournament record adds weight to a course built for resort play, yet its varied ground asks for more than distance. Club selection and positioning matter whenever the routing moves away from its wider fairways.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Roman Road adds a proven tournament course to a South Wales stay without requiring a move away from Celtic Manor. It can sit beside the Twenty Ten or Montgomerie Course, giving groups another full round within the same resort.

Kinfern can include it in a tailored golf experience that combines Celtic Manor with nearby South Wales venues, while keeping accommodation and transfers straightforward. Its fairer landing areas also make it a useful choice for mixed-handicap groups seeking championship history within a comfortable resort schedule.
