Along the Dee Valley

The golf course at Vale of Llangollen Golf Club began as a nine-hole layout in 1908, two years after John (Jack) Morris visited the valley to advise on the site and possible routing. In 1967, the club acquired Bryn Dethol Farm and asked Hawtree & Son to design an 18-hole course. Some of the older holes were retained, leaving a layout shaped by both phases of its history.

Most of the course lies on gently contoured ground beside the River Dee. The 9th follows the river on the right as its fairway bends left, while the 16th plays back in the opposite direction. Wind moving along the valley can alter club choice, even when the terrain looks calm.

The course has three par fives and closes with a par three. Its push-up greens have been improved through regular sand dressing, while clay and alluvial soils reflect the riverside setting. Length and position remain central to scoring, especially when the wind changes. The club has also hosted major Welsh events at national and professional level.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Vale of Llangollen brings inland variety to a North Wales golf experience often led by coastal links. Its mostly level terrain suits an easy walking day, while the riverside setting gives the round a distinct sense of place.

Kinfern can position the course between northern links rounds or use it as part of a stay near Llangollen and Wrexham. The club's record of hosting major Welsh events also gives groups a proven championship venue without the pace or exposure of a seaside course.
