Braid's Heathland Above Trearddur Bay

The golf course at Holyhead Golf Club began as a railway-backed project intended to create a strong 18-hole course near the Irish Sea crossing. James Braid first visited in 1911, and a temporary 14-hole layout opened in 1912. Work continued until the full course was completed two years later.

Braid used a compact 104-acre site of uneven, rocky ground rather than smoothing away its natural movement. Fairways cross at the sixth and seventh, while the short par fours at the first and 14th preserve an older style of course design. Bracken and broom frame many playing lines, with patches of heather adding colour and further trouble away from the fairways.

The elevated 10th tee opens wide views across Holy Island and towards the Irish Sea. Wind can change the value of Braid's intended angles, making tee position and club selection important even though the course measures close to 6,000 yards.
