Beyond the Scorecard

  • Course established: 1892
  • Course designer/s: R. M. Ruck, Herbert Fowler, Harry Colt, and James Braid
  • National ranking: #4 in Wales
  • Known for: Bernard Darwin's lifelong attachment to Aberdovey
  • Defining feature: Out-and-back routing between railway and shore

Between Railway and Bay

The golf course at Aberdovey Golf Club grew from informal play on the common between the railway and the sea. Arthur Ruck first marked out a simple nine-hole course with flowerpots, while R. M. Ruck completed an 18-hole layout by the end of 1892. Herbert Fowler's work in 1920 is largely responsible for the course seen today.

The routing is often described as out-and-back, although it bends and crosses itself around the third and 16th holes. Bay winds can change the task from one round to the next. Short holes break up the longer coastal stretches, while firm turf keeps running approaches in play.

The par-three 12th sits close to the beach, where steep ground on the left and sand to the right narrow the safe target. Later, the short par-four 16th follows the curve of the railway. Golfers can challenge the green, but out of bounds, bunkers, and penalty areas make a measured lay-up a sound choice.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Aberdovey adds a respected Welsh championship venue to a North Wales itinerary. The club has hosted national amateur events and remains a regular venue for the Welsh Seniors' Championships. Its station-side setting also makes arrival by rail unusually convenient for a remote coastal course.

Kinfern can pair the round with Royal St David's and nearby stays, creating a North Wales golf experience that balances two leading links while allowing enough time to enjoy the quieter Dyfi coast.
