The Old Ground at Tayport

The golf course at Scotscraig Golfing Club began in 1817, when members of the Society of St Andrews Golfers sought somewhere to play more often. Davie Robertson laid out the earliest holes across Garpit Race Course, and the opening pair still follow lines used more than two centuries ago.

The club returned to the site in 1888 with nine holes, expanded to 18 in 1904, and asked James Braid to reshape the course in 1923. His work established much of the strategic pattern golfers meet today, building on earlier influence from Old Tom Morris.

The course sits on sand-based ground, yet its gorse, heather, and woodland edges give it a character between links and heathland. Firm surfaces favour the running ball, while large, rolling greens and angled bunkers reward position from the tee.

At the fourth, Westward Ho, a raised knoll green turns a short dogleg into a precise approach. It is one of several holes where modest distance disguises the decisions required, and it captures Scotscraig's ability to feel historic without becoming predictable.
