Old Tom's Heathland in the Howe

The golf course at Ladybank Golf Club began in 1879, when 15 founding members commissioned Old Tom Morris to lay out six holes at Annsmuir. Morris returned for the autumn meeting and won the medal, giving the new club an unusually fitting first chapter.

The course expanded in stages rather than arriving fully formed. A circular nine opened in 1910, another nine were laid out in 1958, and the present 18-hole course was officially opened in 1962.

The routing sits in the sheltered Howe of Fife, moving through heather, Scots pine, silver birch, and sandy ground that gives the course a firm inland character. Tree-lined doglegs can close the route to the green, while subtle contours make approaches difficult to judge. The walk between greens and tees remains compact, keeping the round flowing.

Ladybank's place in Scottish golf was underlined in July 1983, when Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros played an exhibition match before an estimated 5,000 spectators. The day remains one of the club's defining occasions.
