Across the Clifftops of St Andrews Bay

The Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews opened in 2001, with Sam Torrance leading the design alongside Gene Sarazen and Denis Griffiths. The course was altered in 2008, when two former closing holes became part of the neighbouring Kittocks layout and two holes from the former Devlin Course were brought across. That change gave the present routing its shape.

Early holes rise and circle the resort, holding back the broadest coastal views until the downhill par-three eighth. From its tee, the inward half spreads below, with the Tay Estuary and Angus beyond. The ground then feels more open. Wispy rough edges the fairways, while revetted bunkers and tight run-off areas ask for careful lines into the large greens.

The seventeenth gives the finish its clearest Scottish note, with a dry-stone wall and deep bunkers guarding the par-three green. The course staged DP World Tour events from 2020 to 2022. The Asian Tour followed in 2023, then the Scottish Men's Amateur Championship in 2024.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

The Torrance suits golfers who want a modern round close to St Andrews without leaving the comfort of a full resort. Fairmont describes it as the friendlier of its two courses, and the broad layout gives visiting groups room to settle into the day.

The resort keeps practice facilities and caddie services nearby, with dining and accommodation on the same estate. It can also sit neatly within a wider St Andrews experience, giving Kinfern guests a polished coastal round with fewer logistical demands.
