Old Tom's Links at Fife Ness

The Balcomie Links at Crail Golfing Society formally opened as nine holes in 1895 after Old Tom Morris redesigned the site during the previous year. He returned in 1900 to extend it to 18 holes, shaping much of the course still played today. The Society itself dates to 1786, while club records show competition at Balcomie as early as 1857.

Set on a narrow promontory at Fife Ness, the course begins by falling towards the sea. The next four holes hug the coast before the routing moves inland, then returns to the shoreline for the closing stretch. North Sea wind can quickly alter club selection and the value of each angle.

Natural hollows and old stone walls give the course a distinctly handmade character. Several holes ask golfers to work with the ground, while firm summer conditions can bring slopes into play around the greens.

The old links remains closely tied to its setting, with views across the Firth of Forth and a routing shaped more by the land than by heavy construction.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Balcomie suits golfers who value character and changing angles over sheer length. Its relaxed rhythm makes the round enjoyable, while the wind and compact targets still ask for care from the opening tee through to the finish.

For travellers based around St Andrews, it offers a rewarding contrast to the region's longer championship courses without losing its traditional East Neuk identity. Kinfern can include the course within a tailored golf experience for players seeking classic links golf and enough variety to invite another round.
