Golf Found Within the Dunes

The golf course at Machrihanish Dunes opened in 2009 on protected coastal land beside Machrihanish Bay. David McLay Kidd worked with the existing dunes rather than imposing a heavily manufactured layout, leaving the fairways largely as they were found. Only the tees and greens were shaped, giving the course an unusually direct relationship with the original ground.

The routing moves repeatedly towards, away from, and alongside the Atlantic. Uneven lies, partly hidden targets, and natural changes in elevation ask golfers to judge more than distance alone. Firm-running options remain important, while the scale of the dunes can also call for shots played through the air.

The course occupies a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with protected plants and wildlife influencing where its holes could be placed. Hebridean black sheep are also used to control parts of the rough, reinforcing a landscape-led approach that feels far older than the course's opening date.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Machrihanish Dunes rewards golfers willing to travel beyond Scotland's busier golf centres. Its Kintyre setting allows a round here to pair naturally with the historic Championship Course at Machrihanish Golf Club, creating two sharply different links experiences within the same area.

Resort hotels and cottages also make an overnight stay practical. Kinfern can build both courses into a South West Scotland golf experience, giving the itinerary a quieter coastal chapter and enough time to enjoy this remote part of the country.
