A Modern Links with Older Roots

Dirleton Links at Archerfield officially opened in 2006, bringing golf back to land where the game had been played for centuries. The present course is modern, yet its setting carries a much older golfing story, with the 17th-century Archerfield House standing behind parts of the layout.

David J Russell shaped a traditional links test around rolling ground rather than forcing spectacle onto it. Gorse-covered mounds separate many holes, while revetted pot bunkers, burns, and drainage ditches repeatedly narrow the safest lines. The fairways often leave room from the tee, but the best angles into the greens must be earned.

Run-up areas allow golfers to use low approaches, although poor positioning becomes more costly as the round moves into the back nine. The sharply contoured 13th green and the long, dog-legged 16th show the course at its most demanding. As a whole, they reflect Dirleton's main challenge: sound decisions matter as much as clean ball-striking.
