Two Nines, Two Links Eras

The Championship Course at Newburgh Links Golf Club began as a nine-hole layout in 1888, set between the Foveran Burn and River Ythan. It reached 18 holes in 1912 under James McAndrew, then contracted during and after the First World War before returning to nine.

A major change came in the 1990s. Land on the higher Foveran Links allowed Greens of Scotland to create a new nine, with Glen Andrews building its greens and bunkers. The present 18-hole course opened in April 1996.

That history remains visible in the round. The newer opening half climbs and falls across higher, undulating ground, bringing tiered greens and broad views over the estuary, North Sea, and Sands of Forvie. The older closing half sits lower beside the river, where firm fairways, blind approaches, sandy ridges, punchbowl greens, and thick gorse create a more traditional links test.

Together, the two halves give Newburgh a changing rhythm: expansive and modern at first, then tighter, quirkier, and rooted in the natural linksland.
