Between Dunes, Burns, and Heather

The Championship Course at Murcar Links Golf Club opened in 1909 on rugged coastal ground immediately north of Aberdeen. Archie Simpson advised on the original routing, while James Braid refined the layout during the 1930s. Much of their historic framework remains in play today.

The course moves across crumpled linksland rather than following a simple out-and-back line. Elevated tees reveal narrow landing areas, raised greens, and changing angles, while whins and heather tighten the route without making every hole look alike. Its closeness to the North Sea brings wide views, but the dunes often enclose individual shots.

Burns add another layer of strategy. At the par-four 7th, Serpentine, the drive must account for a looping watercourse, a ravine, and a fairway set between high dunes. Elsewhere, uneven lies and firm ground place a premium on controlling shape and bounce.

Recent work has continued carefully. During winter 2024/25, its 3rd fairway was reinvented for better playability, with a road-hole-style bunker added short-left of the green.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Murcar Links adds a demanding, characterful round to a Kinfern golf experience in Aberdeen. Its rugged dunes, shifting winds, strategic burns, and elevated tees give the region's coastal route another distinct test, while its position beside Royal Aberdeen makes it easy to include within the same part of an itinerary.

Kinfern can pair Murcar with Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, and other Aberdeen golf region's championship courses to create a varied sequence of North Sea links, giving golfers different demands on accuracy, patience, and shot control while maintaining a strong sense of Aberdeenshire golf.
