Centuries Written Across the Links

The 1562 Course at Montrose Golf Links stands on ground where golf has been recorded for more than four centuries. Its formal 18-hole history began in 1863, when Old Tom Morris shaped a complete course across the links. Willie Park Jr. made further changes before Harry Colt established the layout recognised today in 1913.

The unusual T-shaped routing gives the round several changes in direction. Much of the front nine follows the shoreline, opening views across the North Sea, while holes 10 to 13 move inland before the course turns back towards the coast.

Undulating fairways, firm turf, gorse, dunes, and deep bunkers create the traditional links character. Fast greens add another layer, particularly when the easterly wind pushes inland from the sea and changes the demands of familiar shots.

The coastline is also part of the course's continuing story. Coastal erosion led to the realignment of the second hole in 2008, showing how this historic links continues to adapt to its exposed setting.
