Championship Golf Along the Lake

The Killeen Course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club opened in 1972 after Eddie Hackett and Billy O'Sullivan divided the earlier Mahony's Point layout and added nine holes on newly purchased land. David Jones updated it before the 1991 Irish Open, while Donald Steel later led a full reconstruction. The renewed course reopened in 2006 with new greens, tees, bunkers, and added length.

Flat lakeside ground makes water the main recurring defence. Lough Leane comes into play from the opening hole, returns beside the 7th, and remains visible across the round. Tree-lined fairways narrow the sightlines, while several greens ask for approaches shaped around ponds, bunkers, or the lake itself.

Several holes carry names tied to the surrounding landscape. The 10th, "Pure Champagne," plays to a green with water long and short, with Inishfallen Island beyond. The 14th passes the oldest tree on the course, a Turkey oak, and the 18th follows water back towards the clubhouse.

Killeen hosted the Irish Open in 1991, 1992, 2010, and 2011. Nick Faldo won the first two, followed by Ross Fisher and Simon Dyson, giving the course a tournament record spanning two distinct eras of its design.
