Castle and Lake at the Finish

The golf course at Dromoland Castle Golf Club began in 1961 as a Brook L. Wigginton design. Ron Kirby and JB Carr later reworked the layout, with the renewed championship course completed in 2003. Their changes brought the estate's water, slopes, and mature woodland more firmly into the strategy.

The course now moves across the Dromoland estate through gentle hills, ancient trees, and wildflower ground. Its hazards often appear where a golfer must decide between position and distance, while streams, ponds, and the lake keep water present throughout the round.

The 7th is a downhill par three with Dromoland Castle beyond the green and a pond short and left. At the 9th, longer hitters can challenge a feature pond and attempt to drive the short par four.

The closing stretch provides another change of scale. The 16th crosses the river on the approach, the 17th plays towards a green beside marshland, and the par-five 18th follows the lake towards the castle.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Dromoland Castle adds an inland estate round to a South West Ireland experience often centred on Atlantic links. Its position near Shannon Airport makes it practical for an opening or final day, while the resort setting suits travellers who want golf and accommodation in one place.

Kinfern can pair Dromoland with Lahinch or another County Clare course, giving the itinerary a clear shift in landscape and playing style. The castle, clubhouse, and practice facilities also allow the day to extend beyond the tee time.
