The Natterjack's Historic Links

The golf course at Dooks Golf Club began as nine holes laid out in 1889 by Royal Horse Artillery officers stationed near Glenbeigh. Anthony Brown improved the course in 1895, and a brief 18-hole expansion followed in 1900 before costs forced a return to nine.

Its survival later depended on the members. When the club's lease expired in 1963, the "Save Dooks" campaign raised the money needed to buy the land. Members then designed and built nine additional holes under Eddie Hackett's guidance, and the completed 18-hole course opened in 1970.

Martin Hawtree prepared a full renovation plan in 2002. Work carried out from 2003 to 2006 introduced sixteen new greens and renewed the tees and bunkers, while keeping the course tied to its natural linksland.

The sandy ground also supports one of Ireland's remaining Natterjack toad habitats. Dooks adopted the nocturnal amphibian as its emblem, giving the club a symbol rooted directly in the landscape around the course
