MacKenzie Among the Limestone

The golf course at Cork Golf Club belongs to a club formed in 1888, though Little Island became its permanent home in 1897. Members first played among working limestone quarries, filling craters with stone and topsoil to create the fast-draining ground that still shapes the course.

David Brown developed the early layout before Alister MacKenzie led its defining reconstruction in 1925. He introduced three new holes and rebuilt the greens. Sand-filled bunkers were another major departure, leaving the broad contours and strategic angles associated with his work.

The round changes character as it reaches the harbour. The 4th and 5th follow the water before holes 6 to 10 move through the former quarry, where exposed rock and changes of level frame unusual playing lines. Large, undulating greens demand careful approaches, and the firm turf keeps the ground game relevant.

Later work by Hawtree Ltd, completed in 2013, reshaped tees and bunkers with closer reference to MacKenzie's ideas. Cork's history also includes the 1932 Irish Professional Open and the 1933 Irish Amateur Close, confirming its long place in Irish championship golf.
