Colt's Links Above the Atlantic

The Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club formally opened in 1933, following Harry Colt's final design for the site. His routing uses natural dune ridges to create changes in height, angled fairways, and greens that sit naturally within the coastal ground. The club itself dates to 1888, but Dunluce became the layout that secured Portrush's international reputation.

Martin Ebert led the major redesign completed before The Open returned in 2019. The new par-five 7th, Curran Point, and par-four 8th, Dunluce, were built on land previously used by the Valley Links. They replaced the former closing holes and preserved the championship test while making room for modern event infrastructure.

The course moves between enclosed dune corridors and exposed viewpoints above the Atlantic. White Rocks, the short par-four 5th, brings out-of-bounds tight behind the green, while the clifftop 6th plays towards a narrow target above the beach. Late in the round, Calamity Corner asks for a long carry beside a steep ravine, leaving little room for a weak shot to the right.
