Around the Sandhill and Shore

The Annesley Links at Royal County Down Golf Club was first recorded as a nine-hole relief course in 1929 and had become an 18-hole layout by 1932. Its original designer is not identified in the records reviewed. Donald Steel & Company later extended the course with two new holes, before Mackenzie & Ebert added three more around a large sandhill.

The course shares the Championship Links' setting between the sea and Mountains of Mourne, with its fairways moving through the same duneland. Narrow landing areas cross heaving ground towards small, undulating greens. Some targets remain open to view, while others are partly or fully hidden by the natural contours.

The newer holes around the turn reach the north-east corner of the property. Two par fours and a par three move around the sandhill, with the 10th running closer to the beach than any other hole across Royal County Down's two courses. At 4,594 yards from the white tees, Annesley rewards controlled distance and thoughtful club choice.
