Clandeboye Golf Club (Dufferin Course)

Across Clandeboye's Higher Ground

The Dufferin Course at Clandeboye Golf Club grew from the club's first layout, completed on the estate in 1930. Clandeboye Golf Club was formally established three years later. In 1969, Bernhard von Limburger, assisted by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, reshaped the site into a 36-hole complex. The present Dufferin incorporated 70 additional acres and the original first nine holes north of the clubhouse.

From its elevated opening tee, the course looks across Belfast Lough, with the Antrim Coast and mountains of Scotland visible beyond. The land rises and falls naturally, while the fairways offer playable lies after rain because of the ground's moisture-absorbing qualities.

Accuracy carries more value than brute length. Gorse and bracken tighten the lines, while blind drives and raised, stage-like greens change the demands from hole to hole. Water appears only once, leaving the terrain and prevailing wind to shape most of the challenge.
