Between the Railway and Atlantic

The Mussenden Course at Castlerock Golf Club traces its beginnings to the club's formal inauguration in 1901. The original nine-hole links later expanded to 18 holes, with the new course formally opened in July 1909. Its architectural story now carries the names of Ben Sayers, Harry Colt, and Martin Hawtree.

Hawtree led a major reconstruction during the winter of 2017/18. Six holes were changed, while greens, surrounds, and bunkering received substantial attention. The work refreshed the strategic demands without removing the links setting that has shaped play for generations.

The 4th, Leg O'Mutton, is the course's best-known par 3, with out of bounds on both sides and a heavily bunkered raised green. Later, the downhill 17th opens views across the River Bann towards Mussenden Temple and Donegal, with Scotland sometimes visible in clear weather. The final hole turns right towards an elevated green, where pot bunkers and the prevailing wind keep the closing approach exacting.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Mussenden fits naturally into a Causeway Coast golf experience, especially alongside Royal Portrush and Portstewart. Its position gives visiting golfers another highly ranked Northern Ireland links without repeating the same landscape or playing rhythm.

Castlerock also has the nine-hole Bann Course, giving groups scope for extra golf when schedules allow. Kinfern can place Mussenden as a full championship round within a wider coastal itinerary, using its location and 27-hole club setting to create a balanced day around Castlerock.
