The Enduring Shape of Colt

The golf course at Belvoir Park Golf Club took shape after the club's formation in 1927. Harry S. Colt was appointed to design the layout across 163 acres of the Deramore estate. Lord Deramore formally opened it in June 1929, with Sir William Turner striking the first shot.

Colt's routing has remained largely unchanged. Fairways move through mature woodland, with natural slopes and carefully placed bunkers shaping decisions from tee to green. The trees do more than frame each hole. They separate the corridors and give the course its enclosed, settled character despite its position close to Belfast.

That woodland identity deepened in the 1950s when club captain Dr J. A. Smiley led the planting of around 40,000 trees. The area between the 7th and 15th fairways became known as Smiley's Wood, adding another layer to a course whose character has developed without losing Colt's original structure.
