From Parkland to Clew Bay

The golf course at Westport Golf Club belongs to a club founded in 1908, though the present layout dates from 1973. Fred W. Hawtree designed it after the club moved to land that had formed part of the Westport House estate, creating a course that shifts between rolling inland parkland and ground beside Clew Bay.

Its par of 73 includes five par fives, so length and positioning remain important throughout the round. The opening stretch uses elevated ground, while the later holes draw closer to the bay. Croagh Patrick stays prominent across the wider landscape, giving the course a setting closely tied to County Mayo.

The coastal sequence from the par-three 12th, Roman Island, to the par-five 15th, The Reek, provides the clearest change in character. Water, inlets, and exposed ground influence both line and club selection. At the 15th, the drive must carry past an inlet before the hole continues towards a green framed by the surrounding scenery.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Westport adds recognised championship history to a North West Ireland golf experience. The course has hosted the Irish Amateur Close on four occasions, as well as the Irish Seniors, Smurfit Irish PGA Championship, Irish Ladies Close, Ladies Home Internationals, and AIG Cups & Shields All-Ireland Finals. Its nine-hole pitch-and-putt course also offers a relaxed extra round.

Kinfern can use Westport as a parkland counterpoint within an itinerary otherwise centred on the region's celebrated coastal links, adding welcome variety without leaving County Mayo.
