Merrigan's Lakeside Parkland Test

The golf course at Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club opened in 1992, with Irish architect Patrick Merrigan using West Cavan's drumlin valley as the basis for the routing. He wrapped holes around natural lakes and rolling ground, preserving the character of the land. The resort became PGA National Ireland in 2019.

The course measures 7,053 yards from the back tees, though its main examination comes closer to the greens. Slopes and subtle contours place a premium on accurate approaches, while water influences decisions without dominating every hole. The 434-yard second introduces that theme early, asking for a committed drive with water in play.

The inward half carries much of the course's strongest character. Water becomes especially important across the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 16th, and the design encourages golfers to attack only when the line and distance are right. Slieve Russell has hosted two European Tour events and the Irish PGA Championship, while its annual PGA pro-am has been staged since 1997.
