Two Eras Along Sheephaven Bay

The Old Tom Morris Links at Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort began with Morris's visit to Lord Leitrim's estate in 1891. His original course opened in 1893, running from raised ground near the hotel towards the low land beside Tramore Beach before turning inland.

The layout seen today spans more than one period of design. Eddie Hackett and Pat Ruddy created the holes that now form the front nine, and Eric Iverson later restored its greens and bunkering. That Strand Nine reopened in 2009, while the back nine retains much of Morris's Valley routing.

This division gives the course two distinct moods. The opening half crosses smaller, uneven dunes with varied green sites. The inward half moves closer to Sheephaven Bay, where larger dunes frame the holes and the coastline remains in view. Firm ground supports running approaches, while the exposed setting keeps wind central to club selection and shot shape.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Rosapenna gives golfers the convenience of a complete Donegal links stay without repeated transfers. Its hotel has 70 rooms, many overlooking Sheephaven Bay or the courses, and sits close to the first tee. Kinfern can combine the Old Tom Morris Links with the resort's Sandy Hills Links and St Patrick's Links, creating three notably different rounds from one base.

A 12-hole Academy course and practice grounds also provide useful options before, after, or between the main rounds.
