Shared Greens Beside Ballymastocker Bay

The golf course at Portsalon Golf Club opened in 1891 and was originally laid out by Charles Thompson of Portrush. Portsalon became one of the nine founding clubs of the Golfing Union of Ireland, giving the remote Donegal links an important place in Irish golf history.

Pat Ruddy led a major redevelopment in 2000, adding nine new holes and making substantial changes to four others. More recent work under Paul McGinley has included bunker renovations and updates to the opening tee. The result keeps the course tied to its early character while asking modern golfers to make careful choices from the start.

Fairways move through natural dunes beside Ballymastocker Bay before the routing reaches higher ground beneath the Knockalla Mountains. The second bends beside Lough Swilly and has become the course's most recognised hole. Elsewhere, broad shared greens connect holes in a manner associated with older links design. Wind and uneven ground shape each decision, while greens set into natural folds place judgment above raw distance.
