Across the Renville Peninsula

The golf course at Galway Bay opened in 1993 as a Christy O'Connor Jr. design on the Renville Peninsula. The layout spreads across open coastal ground, with views towards Galway City, the Burren, and the Clare hills.

Wide fairways provide room from the tee, but the course becomes more exact near its large, intricate greens. Sculpted mounding, water hazards, and strong run-offs shape the approaches, while the exposed site lets Atlantic wind alter both distance and direction.

The property also carries traces of earlier life on the peninsula. A former copper mine, old stone structures, and a ring fort remain within the wider course setting. These details give the modern layout a stronger connection to Renville's past.

Galway Bay soon proved suitable for tournament golf. Darren Clarke won the Irish PGA Championship here in 1994, and Constantino Rocca took the West of Ireland Classic in 1999. Recent bunker work and rewilded native areas continue to refine the course without changing its broad championship character.
