Across Three Faces of Rosses Point

The Colt Championship Links at County Sligo Golf Club began with nine holes laid out by George Combe in 1894. Willie Campbell extended the course to eighteen holes in 1906, before Harry Colt arrived in 1927 and replaced most of the earlier clockwise layout with the anti-clockwise routing played today.

The round moves through three distinct areas of Rosses Point. Early holes cross rolling ground near the clubhouse, the middle section drops towards Drumcliffe Bay, and holes 11 to 17 occupy the exposed headland. Raised plateau greens, run-offs, burns, and well-placed bunkers keep approach position important as the wind changes.

Colt used sharp changes of direction, following a pattern the club says he admired at the Old Course at St Andrews and other historic links. Pat Ruddy later strengthened selected tees, greens, and bunkers while leaving Colt's routing intact.

County Sligo is also the long-standing home of the West of Ireland Amateur Championship. Benbulben, Knocknarea, sandy beaches, and the Atlantic remain in view across a course closely tied to the sporting and cultural identity of Rosses Point.
