Nicklaus Strategy on the Nore

The golf course at Mount Juliet Estate opened in 1991, with Jack Nicklaus playing an exhibition match against Christy O'Connor Snr. Nicklaus and Ron Kirby shaped the layout across old estate parkland, where mature trees, the River Nore, and rolling pasture provide the setting. Its early years brought the Irish Open in 1993, 1994, and 1995.

Water and sand set the main strategic questions. Five lakes affect six holes, and more than 80 bunkers frame landing areas and greens. From the championship tee, the par-three 3rd demands a 180-yard carry over water. The 11th, 13th, and 14th continue the theme, with approaches guarded by both bunkers and lakes.

The course's unusual 16th green sits inside a wall and is almost surrounded by a bunker. Tournament history adds another layer: Tiger Woods won the 2002 WGC-American Express Championship, and Ernie Els followed in 2004. The Irish Open returned in 2021 and 2022, bringing modern championship golf back to the estate.
