Headfort Golf Club (New Course)

Across the Blackwater Islands

The New Course at Headfort Golf Club opened to members in 2000, two years after the club bought adjoining land from the former Headfort Estate. Christy O'Connor Jnr routed the course across the River Blackwater and through ground marked by mature specimen trees. The land also includes two islands associated with the estate's Asiatic tree collection.

Water shapes both the views and the decisions. The routing crosses the river, while bunkers and rolling fairways ask for accurate placement before the approach. Headfort particularly highlights the par threes at the 4th, 7th, 11th, and 17th. Each brings its own demand, with the surrounding trees and water giving these holes a strong sense of place.

The longer holes change the rhythm. The par-five 6th and 14th favour controlled length, while the par-four 8th, 10th, and 18th call for precise play. This mix has supported tournament golf at Headfort, including the Irish Challenge in 2019 and 2023. The result is a modern parkland course whose challenge comes from careful placement across the estate's natural features.
