O'Meara Among the Estate Trees

The O'Meara Course at Carton House opened in May 2002 as the estate's first 18-hole layout. Mark O'Meara worked with Tim Lobb of European Golf Design, routing the course across gently undulating parkland and through trees planted over generations on the Carton Estate. Blue cedars stand near the 7th tee, while Lebanese cedars rise behind the 15th green.

Much of the course's identity comes from the River Rye. The strongest sequence arrives from the 14th to the 16th. The par-five 15th crosses the river twice, sitting between two par threes where water controls the line and required carry. This late stretch places a premium on accuracy and calm decision-making.

Tyrconnell Tower can be seen from 11 holes, giving the middle of the round another clear link to the estate. The final hole returns golfers towards the Palladian manor, with the reflective lake and Boat House completing the view. These landmarks keep the course closely tied to Carton House from the opening holes to the finish

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Carton House is well placed for the opening or final round of a Dublin-region itinerary, with the resort around 25 minutes from both Dublin Airport and the city centre. The O'Meara offers a clear parkland change of pace when an Irish schedule leans heavily towards coastal links.

Kinfern can also pair it with the Montgomerie Course at the same estate, giving golfers two contrasting designs while keeping accommodation and transfers simple. That combination suits travellers who value variety without adding another hotel move.
