Bunkers, Swales, and Crosswinds

The Montgomerie Course at Carton House opened in 2003, one year after the resort's O'Meara Course. Colin Montgomerie worked with Stan Eby of European Golf Design to create a modern inland layout within the open ground of the Carton Estate. Rather than copy a seaside course, the design uses links ideas on inland soil.

Deep, steep-faced bunkers set the lines from the tee, often asking players to choose between a safer route and a better angle into the green. Many holes cross the prevailing wind instead of following it, so direction can matter as much as distance. Fescue rough and broad fairways add the visual character, while the sand remains the main threat.

The green sites bring another layer. Strong contours, raised edges, and deep swales can leave awkward recoveries after a missed approach. The par threes are especially useful examples of the course's style, with their targets framed by sand and movement rather than trees. Across the round, position and bunker avoidance carry more value than simply hitting the ball a long way.
