Barcroft's Ground, Simpson's Refinement

The Deerpark Course at Carlow Golf Club began taking shape in 1922, when the club leased 165 acres of the Bruen family's former deer park at Oak Park. Cecil Barcroft planned the first 18-hole layout on the site. In 1937, Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay altered ten greens and reworked many of its sand and grass bunkers, establishing the design that largely remains today.

Its defence begins with the land. Small, fast greens place a premium on approach control, while tight bunkering and trees punish shots sent too far from the intended line.

The 8th descends from the course's highest point, with two stone-faced raths beside the driving area. At the 12th, the approach must cross a deep ravine towards the quickest green on the course. The demanding 16th begins from high ground before asking for an uphill second shot over a valley to a raised, sloping target.

Across the round, Deerpark's slopes dictate club choice and landing position, giving this inland layout a character rooted in its original ground.
