The Irish Sea Reframed

The golf course at Brittas Bay Club carries forward the site of The European Club, which opened to the public in 1993 after Pat Ruddy developed the links among County Wicklow's dunes. The property earned national and international recognition, hosted Irish PGA Championships won by Padraig Harrington, and staged the 2006 Irish Amateur won by Rory McIlroy. Tiger Woods also set the former course record of 67.

In 2025, the site entered a new phase under new ownership and was renamed Brittas Bay Club. Kyle Phillips was appointed to rework Ruddy's original design, with the course closed throughout 2026 and reopening planned for the second quarter of 2027.

The new routing is intended to open sightlines towards the Irish Sea and give golfers more lines of play from wide fairways. Native fescue is being returned across the property, reinforcing the links character while supporting the surrounding dune habitat.

Wind will remain central to the round, but the revised course is being shaped so players can choose lines according to position and conditions. Its identity will rest on movement through high dunes and a more playable reading of land shaped by changing coastal views.

Its public pay-and-play model keeps it accessible, while the club's planned conservation contribution gives each green fee a local purpose through support for nesting terns.
