Fowler's Links Through Braunton Burrows

The East Course at Saunton Golf Club took its present direction in 1919, when Herbert Fowler was commissioned to redesign the course after the First World War. By the early 1920s, the layout had earned a strong national reputation. Military occupation during the Second World War caused extensive damage, and C.K. Cotton later guided its restoration before play resumed in 1952.

The course runs through part of Braunton Burrows, where natural dune corridors shape the holes without frequent sea views. The opening par 4, Gullpit, measures 478 yards from the blue tees and places a cross ditch around 60 yards short of the green. Near the finish, the 207-yard 17th usually plays into the prevailing wind and can demand far more club than its yardage first suggests.

Recent work has returned sand scrapes and dune slacks where scrub had spread, while fairway bunkers have been naturalised to suit the landscape. The course's championship record includes the 1937 English Amateur and the R&A Women's and Men's Senior Amateur Championships in 2024.
