From Reservoirs to Dorset Heathland

The golf course at Parkstone Golf Club began in 1909, when Lord Wimborne commissioned Willie Park Jr. to create a layout in the Luscombe Valley, just inland from Poole Harbour. Construction removed around 13,000 trees, yet the natural sandy contours and steep ground remained central to the design.

By the early 1930s, the club had acquired another 63 acres. James Braid used the new land to create six holes, significantly change four, and lengthen the course. His work established much of the routing played today, including a more varied passage through the valley's heath, pines, and elevation changes.

Later woodland growth began to weaken the open character of the course. Its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest supported the removal of thousands of trees and a return towards heathland. Martin Hawtree also advised on new bunkering. The closing hole adds a final twist: a par 3 from an elevated tee, with the safer miss short or towards the front-right portion of the green.
