Between the Church and Lighthouse

The Championship Course at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club began as a nine-hole layout designed by Charles Gibson across Berrow Warren. It reached 18 holes after the club secured land towards the church, then Herbert Fowler extended it beyond 6,000 yards in 1910. Harry Colt's 1913 plan made the largest architectural change, replacing weaker holes and many blind shots. Construction continued until 1923, with Hugh Alison overseeing progress.

Today, the traditional nine-out, nine-back routing heads north beside the dunes and coast before turning inland and returning past St Mary's Church. Narrow ribbons of fairway run through large sandhills, and deep pot bunkers protect relatively small, undulating greens. The third retains a punchbowl green, while the 18th doglegs left over dunes before a long approach crosses another ridge.

Firm turf and Bristol Channel wind keep the challenge changing. Players must judge bounce, elevation, and exposure, especially when the safest-looking line leaves a difficult angle into the green.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Burnham & Berrow adds deep amateur championship heritage to a South West England golf experience. The club has hosted more than 40 major men's and women's amateur events, including the Brabazon Trophy and both English Amateur Championships, and it remains an Open Final Qualifying venue.

The nine-hole Channel Course and on-site Dormy House can extend the stay without another transfer. Kinfern can also pair the Championship Course with Saunton or Royal North Devon for a varied West Country links itinerary.
