Colt's Heathland Above Poole Harbour

The golf course at Broadstone Golf Club opened in 1898 after Lord Wimborne commissioned Tom Dunn to lay out the original course on his Canford Magna estate. Herbert Fowler later advised on the bunkering. Harry Colt began a wider redesign in 1914, replacing the remaining parkland holes with a new heathland sequence completed in 1922.

The layout spreads across 250 acres of rolling Dorset ground, with fairways running separately through the natural landscape. Heather and gorse tighten the playing lines, while birch and pine frame wider views. The elevated inward nine opens panoramas towards the Purbeck Hills and Poole Harbour. At the seventh, a heavily sloping fairway leads to a raised green, while the long eighth asks for a precise carry to a well-bunkered target.

More than three-quarters of the course lies within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, later recognised as a Special Area of Conservation. Restoration work led by Frank Pont has sought to recover Colt's bunker strategy while protecting the heathland that gives Broadstone its character.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Broadstone gives a Kinfern South West England golf experience a nationally ranked heathland round close to Poole and Bournemouth. Its location makes a pairing with Parkstone or Ferndown practical without a long transfer, while nearby Isle of Purbeck can add a more coastal setting.

The elevated ground and broad views bring a different feel to the region's links courses. Kinfern can use Broadstone as the central round of a Dorset stay built around classic English heathland and varied terrain.
