Oaks and Water Shape the West

The West Course at East Sussex National Hotel Resort opened in 1990 as one of two layouts designed by American architect Robert E. Cupp. The wider complex grew from Canadian entrepreneur Brian Turner's plan for a major golf venue on the former Little Horsted Estate. The West was traditionally known as the members' course.

It follows undulating ground through ancient oaks, beside pools and streams. The third brings water down the right and behind the green, followed by a strongly contoured putting surface. From the ninth, members' "Amen Corner" runs through the 14th, where cards can unravel among trees and water from uneven lies.

The 10th looks towards Horsted Place and asks for an approach across the lake to a two-tier green. The 18th closes along a tree-lined fairway towards a heavily guarded green below the clubhouse. The course hosted Challenge Tour Championships from 1995 to 1998 and European Tour Qualifying School from 1994 to 1997.

East Sussex National gives Kinfern a practical South East England base with two championship courses and accommodation on one property. Practice facilities are also available beside the resort. The West Course can follow the East without another transfer, or serve as the first round before the itinerary moves towards Rye and Kent's historic links.

This arrangement gives golfers two different Robert Cupp layouts at one venue, then a clear change of setting when the experience reaches the coast.
