Cupp's Stadium Course Across Sussex

The East Course at East Sussex National Hotel Resort opened in 1990 after two years of construction. Robert E. Cupp designed it as the tournament-focused half of the 36-hole complex created on the former Little Horsted Estate. Its American stadium form was deliberate, with raised ground beside many holes giving spectators clear views during professional events.

The routing crosses the rolling South Downs landscape on generous fairways, but its size does not remove the need for careful placement. Bent grass was used from tee to green, while USGA-specification construction supports drainage and consistent putting surfaces. Large mounds shape sightlines and separate holes without hiding the main challenge from the player.

The par-four 17th provides the clearest example. A creek follows the right side, changing width as it runs towards the green. The drive must stay clear of the water before the approach crosses it to a large putting surface. It is a bold late-round hole suited to the championship stage Cupp intended.
