Cannon Beyond the Mounds

The golf course at St. Annes Old Links Golf Club was established in 1901, when local golfers returned to land left vacant after the earlier Lytham and St Annes club moved south. George Lowe, the club's first professional, laid out nine holes, and Sandy Herd extended the course to 18 in 1910. The present 10th and 18th retain ground from the earlier course.

The layout is open, flat, and exposed to winds from the Irish Sea. Fast-running fairways place value on controlled flight and the use of the ground, while bunkers and low dunes create sharper definition around the greens. The southern edge holds several of the course's strongest holes.

The par-3 ninth, Cannon, is its best-known feature. Its long green sits partly hidden beyond mounds and bunkers, making distance judgement difficult from the tee. Bobby Jones admired the hole during his visit for the 1926 Open and reportedly took detailed measurements.

The course has since staged Open Final Qualifying on several occasions and co-hosted the Amateur Championship with Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2022.
