Braid's Dunes and Gumbley's Challenge

The golf course at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club began with George Lowe's original work before James Braid reshaped the layout in 1924. His routing moves through dune corridors, heathland, gorse, and heather, with the breeze from the Irish Sea changing how each hole plays. Subtle later lengthening has preserved the main Braid features while keeping the course relevant for stronger modern golfers.

The round starts with a long par three, rather than offering an easy opening drive. Strategic bunkering continues throughout, and rolling greens place value on approach position and pace control. The short eighth rises to a plateau surface where a shot finishing short can fall well back from the target.

The par-five 16th, known as "Gumbley's," provides the course's most unusual moment. Its blind second shot must cross a high dune and sleeper-faced bunkers cutting through the fairway. The hole reflects the wider character of Southport & Ainsdale: natural, demanding, and shaped by the land rather than excessive length alone.
